Copper is relatively soft and alloys readily with other metals to produce e.g. brasses and bronzes. It has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. It oxidizes quickly and polished surfaces are easily tarnished by exposure to the various sulphur compounds and acids present in the atmosphere. An effective alternative to tarnishing prevention is the use of clear lacquer. This will give a considerable, but not indefinite, corrosion protection. Copper is used for decorative purposes, int the electrical and printing industries, used for case hardening of steel and as undercoats in electroplating.
